Reid Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
“This Hispanic Heritage Month, I join millions of Americans in recognizing the incredible contributions that Latino communities across the country have made to our economy, society, and culture. Nearly 57 million Latinos call the United States home, including more than 800,000 in Nevada. I am proud to again co-sponsor the Senate’s Hispanic Heritage Month Resolution, Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week Resolution, and the Smithsonian American Latino Museum Act.
“It is important to not only recognize the vast contributions Latinos have made to our nation, but also do our part to ensure their families have a fair shot at getting ahead. This month, and every month, I reaffirm my commitment to fight for issues of importance to the Latino community, including affordable health care, a higher minimum wage and immigration reform.
“Throughout my Senate career, I have worked tirelessly to improve opportunities for Latino families, immigrant communities, and all Americans. I fought to pass a historic immigration reform bill in the Senate and supported President Obama’s executive actions to make sure DREAMers and their families can fully contribute to our nation without living in fear of being torn from their loved ones. But as my Democratic colleagues and I fight for Latino families, this community is threatened by the Republican Party’s platform of hate.
“Republicans continue to blindly support anti-immigrant rhetoric and endorse the most anti-Latino candidate in American history, Donald Trump. Republicans continue to advance policies that would rip families apart and support a candidate who has called Mexicans criminals and rapists and who wants to deport DREAMers, like my good friend Astrid Silva, from the only country they have ever known. We must do everything we can to protect and defend the Latino community from the threat of Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
“Latinos have been an integral part of the history of Nevada and our country. During Hispanic Heritage Month and throughout the year, we proudly celebrate this culture that has contributed so immensely to our American identity.”
