Congressman Heck Refuses to Apologize on Disparaging Catherine Cortez Masto’s Mexican Heritage
Las Vegas, NV – Following a press conference held by Catherine Cortez Masto and local Latino community leaders, long-time Congressman Heck operatives Tom McAllister and Mark Ciavola expanded their attacks on Catherine Cortez Masto’s Mexican heritage. Speaking with KSNV’s Jeff Gillan, both McAllister and Ciavola tripled down on their disparaging comments on Cortez Masto, who would be the first Latina in the Senate.
Cortez Masto was joined by local immigration activist, Jose Macias, a friend of Catherine’s late father, Tom Rodriguez, and members of southern Nevada’s Latino community to call on Congressman Heck to condemn and apologize for his long-time aide’s comments about Cortez Masto “hispandering” to the Latino community because she does not speak Spanish.
“[Congressman Heck] should come out with an apology,” said Jose Macias, local immigration activist.“If they’re attacking her because of that, that means they’re attacking the whole community.”
Congressman Heck’s campaign tried to distance themselves from McAllister and Ciavola, but this screenshot from a FOX 5 broadcast tonight tells a different story. Behind Congressman Heck are Ciavola and McAllister, both of whom worked for Congressman Heck for years. Just last year, Congressman Heck said of Ciavola and McAllister, “I just know how to show up & do what they tell me.”
“Catherine said it best today: these comments are not only offensive to her, they’re offensive to the entire Mexican-American community,” said Mariela Hernandez, Political Director for Catherine Cortez Masto for Senate. “There are so many Nevadans with diverse and colorful backgrounds, and for Congressman Heck’s aides to question anyone’s heritage is incomprehensible. Congressman Heck owes Catherine Cortez Masto and Mexican-Americans across Nevada an apology.”
