Call Out Joe Heck for Long-Time Aides’ Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric

“Based on the example set by Joe Heck, there is nothing wrong with Donald Trump’s racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, dangerous, and divisive rhetoric…so it is no surprise that long-time top aides of Congressman Heck’s think it is acceptable to bring into question my heritage – to ask just how ‘Mexican’ I really am.”

Las Vegas, NV – This morning, former Nevada Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto joined with members from Las Vegas’ Latino community to call out her opponent, Congressman Heck, for his long-time aides’ comments yesterday disparaging her Mexican heritage. After making remarks on Twitter, the aides then doubled down on the comments, accusing Cortez Masto of “Hispandering.”

“For long-time aides of Congressman Heck to attack my Mexican heritage, claiming that it is only useful for a college application is disgusting,” said Cortez Masto. “It’s offensive not only to me, my father, and my grandfather who immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico, but it is insulting to all Mexican Americans who make America strong. Joe Heck’s aides are diminishing the perseverance and strength of my family and all immigrant families who fought hard to make a better life in America. Joe Heck and his allies are attacking my record and character and are now attacking my heritage and my family. Joe Heck does not stand for Nevadan values and we cannot afford to have him in office.”

“Catherine’s father, Manny Cortez, was one of millions of Mexican Americans that have helped transform Nevada and our country, and I am lucky to have had him as a friend,” said Tom Rodriguez, former colleague of Cortez Masto’s father, Manny. “Without the contributions made by generations of Mexican Americans, the United States would not be what it is today. We must be celebrating our diversity, culture, and achievements, not undermining how far we’ve come. This is why we cannot afford to have Joe Heck representing Nevada in the Senate. He does not represent the values that Manny and I fought so hard to preserve.”

“Catherine has stood up for the Latino community and that is why today I am standing here with her – because, unlike Joe Heck, she knows the importance of leading by example,” said immigration reform activist Jose Macias. “As his former aides continue to disparage Catherine’s heritage and in turn insult all Mexican Americans, Joe Heck unsurprisingly remains silent, just as he did when Donald Trump called Mexicans “rapists” and “criminals,” and for DREAMers to be deported. Instead of speaking out against hateful language spewed by politicians like Donald Trump and Steve King, Congressman Heck has turned his back on us time and time again. Enough is enough. We need a true leader like Catherine who will stand up for the Latino community and families like mine, not Joe Heck.”
